Exploring the Renaissance Tiles has been a rich and rewarding experience as the tiles nuances came to life under my fingers.  Adding shading with Sepia and White Pastel Pencils is like adding cream to coffee as it adds another layer of flavor,  beauty, and complexity to the artwork. The addition of Renaissance Tiles to one’s Zentangle repertoire is worth the pursuit.  If you have not experimented yet, don’t wait, you will be thrilled with the results.  Don’t know where to get the tiles, see Sharla’s Store link below.

The AquaFluer tangle designed by Maria Thomas, Zentangle Co-Founder is a great addition to the Zentangle repertoire.  Here are two, one on a  Zentangle Tile with graphite shading and the other on a Renaissance Tile using Brown Micron Pigma Pen by Sakura and shading enchanced with Derwent sepia watercolor pencil and General’s white pastel pencil.

It fits so nicely into my botanicals but also appeals to my personal love of striping with its op-art flair that is supported with the Striping Tangle design by Maria Thomas (Zentangle founder).

I love Zentangle Patterns with an Op-Art Flair

Madeline's Tangled Story of the Greek Goddess Aphrodite

Madeline (age 12) Tangles a Story of Aphrodite

Madeline's Tangled Story of the Greek Goddess Aphrodite

Madeline’s Tangled Story of the Greek Goddess Aphrodite hands of Aphrodite.”

Recently in a CZT discussion group, I was introduced to the idea of combining writing with the Art of Zentangle. I put that little gem in my idea bag with little additional thought and went on my merry way.

A couple of weeks later, I was completely taken by surprise when I was appointed the caretaker to watch over my 12 year old granddaughter Madeline.  I was tangling away and she was too.  I asked her to share with me her piece and to my surprise, she told me the story behind why she choose her composition and tangle choices.

I was humbled by Madeline’s imagination and the fact she intuitively understood that she could tell a powerful story through Zentangle.  Needless to say I am a very proud Grandma!  I guess starting her on her Zentangle journey at 8 has paid off in royalties I was not expecting.

I asked her permission to include her story and tangle on my blog which she graciously gave.  I asked her to write down her story.

In Madeline’s own words:  “It all starts out with a Greek goddess known as Aphrodite who creates love which turns into a warm feeling that comes from the sun, which makes plants grow, and soon the plants grow flowers which lay in the hands, the warm hands of Aphrodite.

Pushing the limits of a Tangle adds excitement to the daily practice of Zentangle.

One of my go-to / comfort Tangles that I like to push is Mooka.

Below are many of my Mooka Inspired Zentangle Tiles and Art Pieces done from 2011 to present.

I have been blogging about Mooka Blues & Mooka Renaissance, and Mooka on Black over the last couple of months (May 2014, June 2014, July 2014) so I pulled them all together in this gallery presentation.  It is a revelation to see the growth that over three and half years of almost daily Zentangle practice produces in the work. I am never sure where my Mooka exploration is going to lead me but today’s focus is on how line can stand on its own and make a powerful statement.  If you have been following my posts over the last couple of months, you will have noted that most of my work includes shading, but occasionally I do find that line is enough for the look I am trying to create.

I continue to experiment with various ink colors on the tan tiles and include two more here today.  I repeat myself when I say, I am amazed at how well  alternate ink choices look on the rich surface of Zentangle’s new Renaissance Tiles. Continue reading
