Eco-Dyeing and Tangle-Inspired Botanicals

I love the way Eco-dyeing on paper captures the essence of a botanical allowing me to evolve and morph small color suggestions into my personal style of Tangle- Inspired Botanicals.  If you want to learn how to create your own style of Tangle-Inspired Botanicals, look into my book of the same name below.

Eco-Dyed paper was the zenspiration for this Tangle-Inspired Botanicals by Sharla R. Hicks, Artist and CZT.

Time speeds on and one day you look up and realize it has been quite awhile since you blogged.  Let me catch you up!

I have accomplished a couple of major goals in the gap between now and my last posting.  It is amazing how creative goals can gulps time and energy leaving little time or mind space for other things, like blogging.

Exploring the Natural World through Mindful, Expressive Drawing is the subtitle to the book because each chapter is introduced with my personal nature photography that showcases Zenspirational possibilities for expressive tangles and repetitive patterning guided by a synergistic partnership of “logic and intuition” for finding unique tangles inspired by your favorite florals, leaves, trees, reeds & weeds, landscapes, and more.

The S and C curve in Zentangle Gallery: Artist Sharla R. Hicks, CZT

My SharlaRella and Indyrella Series began in early 2011 and continues on today. Take note that with each exploration in the gallery my tangling techniques, design and shading skills grew. The daily practice of Zentangle and exploring the same Tangle in a Series produced a creative explosion of new and exciting variations.

This week I was the guest blogger on the I Am The Diva Blog and I choose to featured some of my favorite tangles in I Am The Diva Weekly Challenge #231,  “The Undulating Tangles in C and S minor”:  Indyrella, it’s variation SharlaRella, and Isochor. I have illustrated the steps . . . Enjoy the Gallery Continue reading

Mooka Curves in White with Glitz on on Black by Sharla R. Hicks, Certified Zentangle Teacher, copyright 2014

Gallery: Black, White, Gold & Glitz Inspiration by Sharla R. Hicks

A late addition to Black, White and Gold Glitz theme is a lovely mooka on black highlighted with gold that I completed in September.  Here I show you the two stages of the ZIA (Zentangle Inspired Art) before glitz  and after glitz.   I am never sure which I like better, I love the purity of the white only but I also love the added elegance and warmth that the gold offers.

Then keep on scrolling down and enjoy the Gallery  that groups all the Black, White, Gold & Glitz posted in August & September 2014 together in one spot . . . this gallery overview shows my personal growth in understanding how white pen works on black, the exploration of adding shading or just using line, and finally explores the wonderful world of glitzy metallic pens.  I am partial to Sakura Gelly Rolls because they are so smooth and the price point is excellent. Excitement boils over when I begin exploring a new background or pen color and how far I can push it limits.  Often glitz comes out to play in these less than traditional Zentangle explorations and the Sakura Gelly Roll Pens is often the go-to-tool.  Much is learned each time I play with the interaction of glitz on a color background oe new pen color.  Add in the rhythmic beauty of tangle cohesion and you have magic. Using CLEAR Stardust Pen for Glitz! by Sharla R. Hicks.

I cannot do a series of posts on glitz without covering the most ethereal and hard to capture in a picture, the Clear Stardust Gelly Roll. The Clear Stardust Pen brings it own subtle glitz to play peek-a-boo depending on the light.  In some lights it looks like pencil shading only, in other lights it reveals its subtle slightly beige glitz that delights the eye.  It is truly one one of my favorites.

TIP:  Clear Stardust Gelly Roll Pen seals graphite so it does not smudge on a Zentangle Tile. I use it to cover the graphite and add a touch of glitter for joy.

Below are  three larger than usual examples with closeups of the Clear Star Pen to capture the subtle glitz.  Remember that they are more beautiful in real life. NOTE: the subtle pen is wiped out with the bright lights of a scan or camera: Continue reading
