I think I am close to ending this theme that explores the Black, White, Gold & Glitz theme found in many of my Black Zentangle Inspired Art Pieces done over the last 4 years.  Each time I revisited the Black Tile or the Sakura Gelly Roll Pens I discovered something new and exciting that I take with me.  In the previous post and this post and I found the beauty in these Glitzy studies of using closely related color together and the subtle, nuanced beauty it brings.

In my last post I missed giving out the details about the pen choices that make the metallics special.  The Sakura Metallic Gelly Roll pens have a set called Dark Metallic pens with very lovely shades that are grayed down and act as a nice foil to the purer metallic colors. They have a subtle color variation that you will see in the below examples. Continue reading

Glitz on Black Zentangle Tiles by Sharla R. Hicks

My theme for August & September 2014 is Black, White, Gold & Glitz

I have always loved a little glitz addition to my creative explorations of color.  It is a joy to see how color interacts with various backgrounds.   I have really been delving deeply in the Zentangle Renaissance Tile and how color work interacts on a tan background but that is another series coming soon so be sure to sign up for my future blog posts.

Today covers the Glitz of my theme August & Sept 2014 Black, White,  Gold & Glitz.  I love working the Metallic Sakura Gelly Roll pens because they glide so smoothly across the surface of the Zentangle Tile.  It feels like icing a cake with a super creamy confectionery sugar glaze.  Today I am sharing early 2011-2012 experimentation with metallic pens.

More Black, White & Gold by Sharla R. Hicks

August and September 2014 Theme: Black, White & Gold in Zentangle

Zentangle Tile by Sharla R. Hicks, Certified Zentangle Teacher with Cubine & Purk
Zentangle Tile by Sharla R. Hicks, Certified Zentangle Teacher using Cubine & Purk. Highlighted with shading and gold metallic gelly roll pen accents.

I am deviating away from the black tiles to share with you how I use the Gold in combination with black ink and graphite shading, so yes it fits into the black, white and gold theme this month.

I have found that enhancing a White Zentangle tile with shading and gold is a very interesting combination.  The special quality of this combination makes the Gold Metallic Gelly Roll a must have in your arsenal of Zentangle tools.

The below tile had large black voids that turned out to be too large and felt boring.  It occurred to me that perking up the tile with gold may be just the trick to counter balance the large boring spaces with a touch of glitz.  I am quite pleased with the results. Continue reading

I have found the combination of White, Gold, and Black very intriguing. I do this on both Black and White Zentangle Tiles with fun and rewarding results. Today I am featuring several Black tiles I have done with Gold and White Sakura Gelly Roll Pens.

The gold metallic gelly roll ink comes in medium pens resulting in thicker strokes and marks.
Using a solid fill of metallic can be a little heavy feeling as shown in the example below.

In the botanical example below, I decided to experiment using white gelly roll pen with cross hatching for the background and as solid fill.

Fill requires a slow application of the ink, drawing each line of white next to previous line.  When you run back over top of the white it will reactivate the ink and lift leaving uneven color.  The slowed down application gives you a cleaner fill with less black showing through.

I continued to be fascinated by how white goes on Black and occassionally revisit the technique.   I have more white than black tiles but I do find the challenge of playing with white gelly roll pen on black worth the effort.  Today I am looking at more White on Black Tiles. The examples rely heavily on line and fill to make a statement.  My choices to add white fill are used to add drama to the pieces. Continue reading

My theme for August  & September 2014 is Black, White, Gold and Glitz.

Today I revisit White Gelly Roll on the Black Zentangle Tile. See my previous post for Mooka on Black and Mooka on Black 2.

It has been my experience that some tangles work better than others. My preference is to select tangles that rely on line as their base stroke since the white gelly roll ink is thick and opaque. It takes some practice to learning how to hold the pen lightly for finer lines.

I use the White Gelly Roll Pen by Sakura because it flows smoothly and has a great price point.  I also use White Glaze Pen and add sparkly accents with the Clear Star Gelly Roll Pen. (Available on my SoftExpressions.com webiste)

Glaze Sakura Pens creates a raised embossed effect and a very solid line.
It comes in many color choices.
Sakura also makes matte embossing pens called Souffle
Both are available at Sharla’s Store SoftExpressions.com

Time and practice are your friends when it comes to learning how the white pen lays down on the paper. This examples done in 2013 shows growth in control of the pen strokes.  Also note, that shading  is not always required as fine lines can be enough.

Exploring the Renaissance Tiles has been a rich and rewarding experience as the tiles nuances came to life under my fingers.  Adding shading with Sepia and White Pastel Pencils is like adding cream to coffee as it adds another layer of flavor,  beauty, and complexity to the artwork. The addition of Renaissance Tiles to one’s Zentangle repertoire is worth the pursuit.  If you have not experimented yet, don’t wait, you will be thrilled with the results.  Don’t know where to get the tiles, see Sharla’s Store link below.

The AquaFluer tangle designed by Maria Thomas, Zentangle Co-Founder is a great addition to the Zentangle repertoire.  Here are two, one on a  Zentangle Tile with graphite shading and the other on a Renaissance Tile using Brown Micron Pigma Pen by Sakura and shading enchanced with Derwent sepia watercolor pencil and General’s white pastel pencil.

It fits so nicely into my botanicals but also appeals to my personal love of striping with its op-art flair that is supported with the Striping Tangle design by Maria Thomas (Zentangle founder).

Madeline's Tangled Story of the Greek Goddess Aphrodite

Madeline (age 12) Tangles a Story of Aphrodite

Madeline's Tangled Story of the Greek Goddess Aphrodite

Madeline’s Tangled Story of the Greek Goddess Aphrodite hands of Aphrodite.”

Recently in a CZT discussion group, I was introduced to the idea of combining writing with the Art of Zentangle. I put that little gem in my idea bag with little additional thought and went on my merry way.

A couple of weeks later, I was completely taken by surprise when I was appointed the caretaker to watch over my 12 year old granddaughter Madeline.  I was tangling away and she was too.  I asked her to share with me her piece and to my surprise, she told me the story behind why she choose her composition and tangle choices.

I was humbled by Madeline’s imagination and the fact she intuitively understood that she could tell a powerful story through Zentangle.  Needless to say I am a very proud Grandma!  I guess starting her on her Zentangle journey at 8 has paid off in royalties I was not expecting.

I asked her permission to include her story and tangle on my blog which she graciously gave.  I asked her to write down her story.

In Madeline’s own words:  “It all starts out with a Greek goddess known as Aphrodite who creates love which turns into a warm feeling that comes from the sun, which makes plants grow, and soon the plants grow flowers which lay in the hands, the warm hands of Aphrodite.
