Mooka Curves in White with Glitz on on Black by Sharla R. Hicks, Certified Zentangle Teacher, copyright 2014

Gallery: Black, White, Gold & Glitz Inspiration by Sharla R. Hicks

A late addition to Black, White and Gold Glitz theme is a lovely mooka on black highlighted with gold that I completed in September.  Here I show you the two stages of the ZIA (Zentangle Inspired Art) before glitz  and after glitz.   I am never sure which I like better, I love the purity of the white only but I also love the added elegance and warmth that the gold offers.

Then keep on scrolling down and enjoy the Gallery  that groups all the Black, White, Gold & Glitz posted in August & September 2014 together in one spot . . . this gallery overview shows my personal growth in understanding how white pen works on black, the exploration of adding shading or just using line, and finally explores the wonderful world of glitzy metallic pens.  I am partial to Sakura Gelly Rolls because they are so smooth and the price point is excellent. August and September 2014 Theme: Black, White & Gold in Zentangle

I am deviating away from the black tiles to share with you how I use the Gold in combination with black ink and graphite shading, so yes it fits into the black, white and gold theme this month.

I have found that enhancing a White Zentangle tile with shading and gold is a very interesting combination.  The special quality of this combination makes the Gold Metallic Gelly Roll a must have in your arsenal of Zentangle tools.

The below tile had large black voids that turned out to be too large and felt boring.  It occurred to me that perking up the tile with gold may be just the trick to counter balance the large boring spaces with a touch of glitz.  I am quite pleased with the results. Continue reading

I have found the combination of White, Gold, and Black very intriguing. I do this on both Black and White Zentangle Tiles with fun and rewarding results. Today I am featuring several Black tiles I have done with Gold and White Sakura Gelly Roll Pens.

The gold metallic gelly roll ink comes in medium pens resulting in thicker strokes and marks.
Using a solid fill of metallic can be a little heavy feeling as shown in the example below.

In the botanical example below, I decided to experiment using white gelly roll pen with cross hatching for the background and as solid fill.

Fill requires a slow application of the ink, drawing each line of white next to previous line.  When you run back over top of the white it will reactivate the ink and lift leaving uneven color.  The slowed down application gives you a cleaner fill with less black showing through.

White on Black Zentangle by Sharla R. Hicks

My theme for August  & September 2014 is Black, White, Gold and Glitz.

Today I revisit White Gelly Roll on the Black Zentangle Tile. See my previous post for Mooka on Black and Mooka on Black 2.

It has been my experience that some tangles work better than others. My preference is to select tangles that rely on line as their base stroke since the white gelly roll ink is thick and opaque. It takes some practice to learning how to hold the pen lightly for finer lines.

I use the White Gelly Roll Pen by Sakura because it flows smoothly and has a great price point.  I also use White Glaze Pen and add sparkly accents with the Clear Star Gelly Roll Pen. (Available on my SoftExpressions.com webiste)

Glaze Sakura Pens creates a raised embossed effect and a very solid line.
It comes in many color choices.
Sakura also makes matte embossing pens called Souffle
Both are available at Sharla’s Store SoftExpressions.com

Time and practice are your friends when it comes to learning how the white pen lays down on the paper. This examples done in 2013 shows growth in control of the pen strokes.  Also note, that shading  is not always required as fine lines can be enough.

Exploring the Renaissance Tiles has been a rich and rewarding experience as the tiles nuances came to life under my fingers.  Adding shading with Sepia and White Pastel Pencils is like adding cream to coffee as it adds another layer of flavor,  beauty, and complexity to the artwork. The addition of Renaissance Tiles to one’s Zentangle repertoire is worth the pursuit.  If you have not experimented yet, don’t wait, you will be thrilled with the results.  Don’t know where to get the tiles, see Sharla’s Store link below.

The AquaFluer tangle designed by Maria Thomas, Zentangle Co-Founder is a great addition to the Zentangle repertoire.  Here are two, one on a  Zentangle Tile with graphite shading and the other on a Renaissance Tile using Brown Micron Pigma Pen by Sakura and shading enchanced with Derwent sepia watercolor pencil and General’s white pastel pencil.

It fits so nicely into my botanicals but also appeals to my personal love of striping with its op-art flair that is supported with the Striping Tangle design by Maria Thomas (Zentangle founder).

Pushing the limits of a Tangle adds excitement to the daily practice of Zentangle.

One of my go-to / comfort Tangles that I like to push is Mooka.

Below are many of my Mooka Inspired Zentangle Tiles and Art Pieces done from 2011 to present.

I have been blogging about Mooka Blues & Mooka Renaissance, and Mooka on Black over the last couple of months (May 2014, June 2014, July 2014) so I pulled them all together in this gallery presentation.  It is a revelation to see the growth that over three and half years of almost daily Zentangle practice produces in the work. I am never sure where my Mooka exploration is going to lead me but today’s focus is on how line can stand on its own and make a powerful statement.  If you have been following my posts over the last couple of months, you will have noted that most of my work includes shading, but occasionally I do find that line is enough for the look I am trying to create.

I continue to experiment with various ink colors on the tan tiles and include two more here today.  I repeat myself when I say, I am amazed at how well  alternate ink choices look on the rich surface of Zentangle’s new Renaissance Tiles. Continue reading

Tutorial with hints and tips on using white gel pen on black tiles.

I am still on my Mooka exploration. I have done a series of Mooka Tiles over the last several weeks. This is the first time I have explored a single tangle  in quite this way.  It has turned into very interesting exploration.

I do find a similarity in each tile, but at the same time a uniqueness to each design.  This series explores seeing what type of botanical tangles and forms are enhanced by Mooka.  If you are interested, review previous posts for Mooka Blues  and Renaissance Mooka postings in the May 2014 Archives and June 2014 Archives.

Each tile is done on the 6×6″ Strathmore’s Black Artist Tiles made from their Artagain coal black paper using Sakura’s White Gelly Roll Pen and General’s White Pastel Pencil.
