2015 Big Bear Lake Zentangle Retreat: Dancing With Petals and Leaves Southern California NOTE:  see our 2016 dates and details NOTE:  The Retreat has come and gone, CLICK HERE for 2016 details ADDED after retreat! What students had to say about the retreat! Holly Atwater of Ha Designs on Facebook I am thrilled to be one of the three who have already signed up for next year’s workshop!! Sharla’s workshops are small, intimate gatherings… So if you imagine learning in a small group with the opportunity of a one on one with the fabulous and inspiring artist, Sharla Conn Hicks, is something you would enjoy (and who wouldn’t?!)… you better register NOW! . (Thank you again, Sharla, for your guidance and encouragement!) Soooo… I just returned from the MOST AMAZING Zentangle® Workshop retreat EVER!! Sharla Hicks workshop, Zentangle Dance of the Petals & Leaves : Colorways & Mixed Media, was an absolute joy! The finished project shown was only a small portion of the art techniques that Sharla so passionately and thoroughly shared with us. We did mono printing, alcohol ink transfers, watercolor backgrounds, explored botanical patterns… this list could go on and on! I will be sharing more as I begin creating with the papers and explore the many techniques shown. Every day was filled with inspiration, from Sharla, her assistant Susan, as well as ALL the attendees! This weekend was not just about art… We also had Diana Hudson, a wonderful Cordon Bleu trained chef (and CZT) cooking the most scrumptious meals with everything prepared to perfection and presented on the loveliest of table settings. I definitely felt spoiled! I can’t say enough about the wonderful people I was able to get to know while at the workshop as well… When it was time to leave on Sunday I felt like I had made some life long new friends. Thank you, Sharla, for the fantastic opportunity to learn from you!   Kathy Dudek: I was fortunate to sign up for the retreat with Sharla. It was amazing, from 9 or 10 in the morning til 9 or 10 at night. The only thing we really had to bring were our pens. If you get the chance to take her botanical series, you should sign up immediately. I grew so much in my tangling, the gourmet meals were incredible, and the sharing was so wonderful. This retreat was of the highest quality, and I’ve attended 18 years of retreats both in tangling and also polymer clay. My husband (a CZT too) and I plan to attend next year. Sharla put her heart and soul to make this such a grand event. Ps her husband and Diana (a CZT chef) outdid themselves. Many, many thanks. ——————————————————————– Original Post: Instructor: Sharla R. Gallery: Black, White, Gold & Glitz Inspiration by Sharla R. Hicks

A late addition to Black, White and Gold Glitz theme is a lovely mooka on black highlighted with gold that I completed in September.  Here I show you the two stages of the ZIA (Zentangle Inspired Art) before glitz  and after glitz.   I am never sure which I like better, I love the purity of the white only but I also love the added elegance and warmth that the gold offers. Then keep on scrolling down and enjoy the Gallery  that groups all the Black, White, Gold & Glitz posted in August & September 2014 together in one spot . . . this gallery overview shows my personal growth in understanding how white pen works on black, the exploration of adding shading or just using line, and finally explores the wonderful world of glitzy metallic pens.  I am partial to Sakura Gelly Rolls because they are so smooth and the price point is excellent. NOTE: For more information on the Sakura’s Metallic Gelly Roll Pens, checkout my store, SoftExpressions.com.     Gallery: Black, White, Gold & Glitz Zentangle Inspired Art by Sharla R. More Black, White & Gold by Sharla R. Hicks

August and September 2014 Theme: Black, White & Gold in Zentangle   I am deviating away from the black tiles to share with you how I use the Gold in combination with black ink and graphite shading, so yes it fits into the black, white and gold theme this month. I have found that enhancing a White Zentangle tile with shading and gold is a very interesting combination.  The special quality of this combination makes the Gold Metallic Gelly Roll a must have in your arsenal of Zentangle tools. The below tile had large black voids that turned out to be too large and felt boring.  It occurred to me that perking up the tile with gold may be just the trick to counter balance the large boring spaces with a touch of glitz.  I am quite pleased with the results.     I was asked to give a Zentangle presentaion to a Soul Collage group and found not only did I add tangles to the front of the card with Gold Metallic, I also Tangled the back of the card that I tied to front with the gold dots and borders.  I used the Sakura Black Gold Shadow Gelly Roll Pen, this particular pen has a lovely olive toned gold that I find very appealing.   If you are interested in learning more about Soul Collage there are classes around the world. In the Southern California area, I take SoulCollage classes from Chantel Zimmerman. She also enriches your creativity and SoulCollage journey with journaling. Black, White & Gold, Oh My! by Sharla R. Hicks

Black, White & Gold, Oh My! by Sharla R. Hicks

August and September 2014 Theme: Black, White & Gold in Zentangle. I have found the combination of White, Gold, and Black very intriguing. I do this on both Black and White Zentangle Tiles with fun and rewarding results. Today I am featuring several Black tiles I have done with Gold and White Sakura Gelly Roll Pens. The gold metallic gelly roll ink comes in medium pens resulting in thicker strokes and marks. Using a solid fill of metallic can be a little heavy feeling as shown in the example below. In the botanical example below, I decided to experiment using white gelly roll pen with cross hatching for the background and as solid fill.  Fill requires a slow application of the ink, drawing each line of white next to previous line.  When you run back over top of the white it will reactivate the ink and lift leaving uneven color.  The slowed down application gives you a cleaner fill with less black showing through. White on Black Zentangle by Sharla R. Hicks

My theme for August  & September 2014 is Black, White, Gold and Glitz. Today I revisit White Gelly Roll on the Black Zentangle Tile. See my previous post for Mooka on Black and Mooka on Black 2. It has been my experience that some tangles work better than others. My preference is to select tangles that rely on line as their base stroke since the white gelly roll ink is thick and opaque. It takes some practice to learning how to hold the pen lightly for finer lines. I use the White Gelly Roll Pen by Sakura because it flows smoothly and has a great price point.  I also use White Glaze Pen and add sparkly accents with the Clear Star Gelly Roll Pen. (Available on my SoftExpressions.com webiste) Check out my Tutorial on how to use White Pen on Black Tile, CLICK HERE Below are examples showing light white to very opaque tangle lines. Early Zentangle works back in 2011     Glaze Sakura Pens creates a raised embossed effect and a very solid line. It comes in many color choices. Sakura also makes matte embossing pens called Souffle Both are available at Sharla’s Store SoftExpressions.com Time and practice are your friends when it comes to learning how the white pen lays down on the paper. This examples done in 2013 shows growth in control of the pen strokes.  Also note, that shading  is not always required as fine lines can be enough.
