I think I am close to ending this theme that explores the Black, White, Gold & Glitz theme found in many of my Black Zentangle Inspired Art Pieces done over the last 4 years.  Each time I revisited the Black Tile or the Sakura Gelly Roll Pens I discovered something new and exciting that I take with me.  In the previous post and this post and I found the beauty in these Glitzy studies of using closely related color together and the subtle, nuanced beauty it brings.

In my last post I missed giving out the details about the pen choices that make the metallics special.  The Sakura Metallic Gelly Roll pens have a set called Dark Metallic pens with very lovely shades that are grayed down and act as a nice foil to the purer metallic colors. They have a subtle color variation that you will see in the below examples. Continue reading

August and September 2014 Theme: Black, White & Gold in Zentangle.

I have found the combination of White, Gold, and Black very intriguing. I do this on both Black and White Zentangle Tiles with fun and rewarding results. Today I am featuring several Black tiles I have done with Gold and White Sakura Gelly Roll Pens.

The gold metallic gelly roll ink comes in medium pens resulting in thicker strokes and marks.
Using a solid fill of metallic can be a little heavy feeling as shown in the example below.

In the botanical example below, I decided to experiment using white gelly roll pen with cross hatching for the background and as solid fill.

Fill requires a slow application of the ink, drawing each line of white next to previous line.  When you run back over top of the white it will reactivate the ink and lift leaving uneven color.  The slowed down application gives you a cleaner fill with less black showing through.

Exploring the Renaissance Tiles has been a rich and rewarding experience as the tiles nuances came to life under my fingers.  Adding shading with Sepia and White Pastel Pencils is like adding cream to coffee as it adds another layer of flavor,  beauty, and complexity to the artwork. The addition of Renaissance Tiles to one’s Zentangle repertoire is worth the pursuit.  If you have not experimented yet, don’t wait, you will be thrilled with the results.  Don’t know where to get the tiles, see Sharla’s Store link below.

I am never sure where my Mooka exploration is going to lead me but today’s focus is on how line can stand on its own and make a powerful statement.  If you have been following my posts over the last couple of months, you will have noted that most of my work includes shading, but occasionally I do find that line is enough for the look I am trying to create.

I continue to experiment with various ink colors on the tan tiles and include two more here today.  I repeat myself when I say, I am amazed at how well  alternate ink choices look on the rich surface of Zentangle’s new Renaissance Tiles. Continue reading

Last week I gave a Zentangle® Workshop to 18 enthusiastic quilters from the Glendale Quilt Guild who did wonderful work.  The work inspired me to explore Mooka and Mooka-esk shapes and how they could be used in a quilt.  My shading supplies were at the office except for the my blue pastel pencil so I embraced the challenge and played with the Mooka Blues, I am in love with the Blues.

Last week I was honored to give my lecture Creativity from the Heart, a Journey of an Expressive Artist to the Glendale Quilt Guild.  I review and revise my lecture before each presentation as I re-look at my personal artistic growth since the last time I did the presentation.

Each time a new insight is gained.  I continue to grow in my Botanical exploration. This is one of my latest experiments with alcohol ink monoprint & Zentangle Inspired Botanicals, expanding my floral interpretations & enhancing with Zentangle patterns
