Mooka Gallery by Sharla R. Hicks, Certified Zentangle Teacher

Pushing the limits of a Tangle adds excitement to the daily practice of Zentangle.

One of my go-to / comfort Tangles that I like to push is Mooka.

Below are many of my Mooka Inspired Zentangle Tiles and Art Pieces done from 2011 to present.

I have been blogging about Mooka Blues & Mooka on the Renaissance Tiles over the last couple of months (May 2014, June 2014, July 2014) so I pulled them all together in this gallery presentation.  It is a revelation to see the growth that over three and half years of almost daily Zentangle practice produces in the work.

  1. I LOVE your Mooka gallery. I’ve always loved the tangle Mooka but have never been comfortable with it. I think if I use it more, I will be happy with it. Thanks so much for the inspiration.

    • Estella. After my first disastereous attempts I did not do Mooka for 6 months. When I finally started, I practiced in a journal so there was no need for perfection just repeating over and over until the strokes became rout and I then focused on doing it on Zentangle tiles.

    • Estelle, spend some time in a practice journal where it does not matter, here you can repeat the Mooka until it becomes muscle memory and you do not have to think about when use it.

  2. I have only been tangling for a little over a year and a half. Mooka is my favorite tangle, although it was difficult to learn at first. I have a blog which has a history of my evolution with the Mooka tangle, as well as my new patterns, a page on where to find difficulty to find Zentangle supplies, a page on “how-to”s. I am trying to offer some things that are a little different from the usual blogs. Since we share a love of Mooka, I invite you to visit my blog. I love what you have here.

    • Mildred, I visited your blog and looks like you are having fun with Mooka over there.

  3. Fascinating gallery. I think some of your very early work was also outstanding, and the direcitons you have taken it are breathtaking. It seems like you accomplish so much interest with relatively few “elements” – Mooka, Tipple and variations on curving lines/auras/striping. Very inspiring!

    • Thank you Jennifer, I really appreciate your comments. I feel my artistic voice has come to the fore front with the introduction of Zentangle in my life, before that I was a frustrated artist when it came to drawing. With Zentangle, I have come to realize the vision is my head is as powerful as drawing realism from real life and much more rewarding, since realism and I do not get along that well. lol
